June 2018Survey

During June in the US, our focus is on men’s health. The purpose is to increase awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that prostate, lung and colon cancer will account for 42% of all new cancer diagnoses in men this year.
  • Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death for men.
  • The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. This is largely a disease of young and middle-aged men, but about 6% of cases occur in children and teens and about 8% occur in men over the age of 55.
  • Nearly 18 of every 100 adult men (17.5%) in the US is a smoker. According to the CDC, if nobody smoked, one of every three cancer deaths in the United States would not happen.
  • Men are more likely than women to drink excessively. Excessive drinking can interfere with male hormone production resulting in impotence and infertility. It can also increase the risk of mouth, throat, esophagus, liver and colon cancers.
  • Many men do not recognize, acknowledge, or seek help for their depression, often because they are uncomfortable talking about the issue.
TAKE ACTION

TAKE ACTION

  • See your doctor annually. Ask about screening tests for high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Remember, in addition to your annual physical, many preventive screenings are covered at 100% under your Pearson benefits.
  • Be informed. The top threats to men’s health aren’t secrets: they’re known, common, and often preventable.
  • Learn the signs and symptoms of depression in men and what to do about it. Also, take advantage of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to get help with stress, depression, grief and other issues. Please note: You must now register on mycigna.com to access EAP benefits or call 1-800-593-4138.
  • Understand how Pearson preventive care medications covered at 100% can help with quitting smoking.
  • Whether it is your friend, brother, dad, boyfriend, spouse, or boss, show them you care about them and their health by wearing blue on Friday, June 15.
