February 2019

The annual recognition of American Heart Month focuses not only on heart disease, but also on other cardiovascular issues like stroke, which shares many of the same risk factors found in heart problems.

GET YOUR FLU SHOT

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States
  • Women often have different heart attack symptoms than men. For instance, instead of having chest pain during a heart attack, women may feel extremely exhausted and fatigued or have indigestion and nausea or experience a vague sense of gloom and doom
  • Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States
  • About one in four American adults has hypertension, better known as high blood pressure, which occurs when the pressure of the blood in your arteries and other blood vessels is too high
  • Hypertension is especially dangerous because it may give no warning signs or symptoms, so many individuals do not even know they have the condition. In fact, 90% of stroke victims had high blood pressure before their stroke
  • According to the American Stroke Association, 80% of strokes are preventable
